About Cheshire & The Wirral

Situated in the North West of England Cheshire, with its concentration on cows and milk production is very much an agricultural county, though there are some industrialised pockets and vehicle manufacture in several of the many small towns.

The gently undulating Cheshire plain gives rise to some very pleasing scenery, but a central sandstone ridge running north to south, and the Pennine slopes to the east provide an interesting and more rugged contrast. Characterised by hedges, trees, woods, grass green fields and attractive black and white timbered farmhouses, Cheshire has retained its rural appearance and feel even though modern agriculture and large dairy herds are not un-common. Regrettably in very recent years commercial pressures have resulted in many farms having to give up milk production.

For the discerning visitor Cheshire offers a number of fine country houses, gardens, parks, art galleries, museums and many other places of architectural, historic and scientific interest. For the energetic there are cycle routes, (including the designated Cheshire Cycle Way), along quiet lanes and walks (including the Sandstone Trail) through open countryside. Numerous country pubs cater for healthy appetites with generous helpings of good food at very reasonable prices.

Cheshire is home to several garden centres and horticultural nurseries with national and international reputations. Last but not least there is Chester, famous for its Roman and medieval heritage, and popular modern city centre shopping.
